Shawarmery: Time Clock with NFC

A time clock built from scratch: self-made NFC readers next to the iPad, and whoever taps a card sees their name on screen straight away. In use in two shops with around 19 staff.

Starting point

With the second shop the team grew to around 19 people at two locations. Clocking in by number code was error-prone, and codes can be passed on. What was needed was something that hangs on the wall from the opening in July 2026 and simply works.

Approach

Next to the iPad hangs an NFC reader I built myself, from the housing to the software. Tap the card and the iPad instantly shows your name, your hours and one big button to confirm. The card alone does not clock in, only the button does, and only in that moment: nothing is back-dated.

If the iPad is asleep, the server wakes it with a message. The readers keep themselves up to date: new software comes from the dashboard at the push of a button, and if anything goes wrong, the reader falls back to the previous version on its own. The server behind it is lean and runs without third-party building blocks.

Result

In daily use since the opening: the team clocks in with card and confirmation, the management sees both shops live, and anomalies like a forgotten clock-out land in a dedicated review list. The screenshots show a demo version with invented names; real staff data stays in the shop.
