Eierwiese in Grünwald: where it all started for me

At 16 I stood behind the bar at the Eierwiese in Grünwald and earned my first camera there. Now it has closed, and from 20 October the Waldhaus Eierwiese takes over.

At 16 I stood behind a real bar for the first time: at the Eierwiese in Grünwald, as a bartender, alongside school. It was one of my first jobs, and one of the most important.

With the money I earned there I bought my first camera. A good part of the first photos that were actually worth something were taken there: glasses against the light, plates on their way out of the kitchen, the garden in the evening. Back then I had no idea it would one day become my job.

Some of my very first enquiries came from exactly that time, from guests who had seen what I was photographing. Later I took pictures for the Eierwiese itself. They are still part of my work today.

The Eierwiese has closed

This year the Eierwiese closed its doors. For everyone who worked there, that is not a happy ending, and I don't want to turn it into a story about me. I still wanted to write it down, because a place can be more than a workplace. For me it was the beginning.

From 20 October: Waldhaus Eierwiese

On 20 October it continues: the Tschurtschenthaler family, known for the Waldhaus zur alten Tram in Straßlach, is opening the Waldhaus Eierwiese. I hope the new team turns it into that kind of place again, where someone starts out at 16 without knowing where it will lead.

I still make photos, menus and websites for restaurants. Here is what that looks like.
